Socks to Keep Your Feet Warm All Winter Long

Socks to Keep Your Feet Warm All Winter Long

Our feet get a lot of fresh air in the summer months. The warmer days are full with activities that require as little as a pair of woman in socksflip-flops to adorn your feet. As the temperature drops and winter approaches, it’s time to cover those tootsies up and protect them from the cold!

It’s important to have the right type of socks when skiing or snowboarding. The wrong sock can lead to cold, wet feet and in bad cases, blisters. Let’s avoid that, shall we? Many people don’t realize that outdoor winter activities do require a specific sock for ideal comfort and performance. Wearing cotton socks is a very common mistake that can leave you miserable on the mountain. Ski and snowboard socks have specific characteristics that cater to the outdoor adventure lifestyle.

The Warmest Socks Should Be…

Seamless

Ski socks either don’t have seams, or they’re specially created to alleviate potential pressure spots that can create blisters.

Moisture Wicking

These socks should also be made from moisture-wicking fabric. Just like the base layers that are explained in The Art of Layering, this is a necessary quality for improved warmth and comfort. The moisture-wicking fabrics help pull moisture away from the skin which helps the feet stay warm, and prevents blisters.

Cushioned

Ski socks also have cushioning in strategic places to help with comfort. A ski sock is often thicker on the ball of your foot as well as the shin, two places that absorb a lot of pressure. Snowboard socks tend to be thicker all around which potentially can cause some discomfort when being worn with ski boots rather than snowboard boots.

Both ski and snowboard socks offer different weights. Choosing either light, medium, or heavy weight socks will depend on personal preference as well as activity and weather conditions. The light socks are good for warm days and medium weight socks are plenty warm for colder days, for most people. Assess your plans for the day and check out the weather to decide the best fit.  It’s always a good idea to bring along an extra pair of socks, in case yours get too wet.

Now that you’ve got the low-down on socks, here are some of our favorite socks for unmatched warmth. We’ve tested the following on the mountain and on the street. Each kept us toasty warm.
