How to Not Let Stress Take Over Your Holiday Season

Young woman wearing Santa's hat is screaming.

The holidays offer plenty of reasons to be stressed out--the gifts you haven’t wrapped (maybe haven't even purchased yet), the meals to plan, the cards to be sent, etc. The lists can go on and on!

Instead of focusing on the amount of things to do in such a short amount of time, take time and ENJOY the spirit of the season! Easier said than done, right? Well, here are some quick tips to help every woman stay grounded, calm, and most importantly, cheerful throughout the happiest (and busiest) time of the year.

Make Lists

It’s cathartic to simply write everything down. This will give relief to your mind from the pressure of having to remember everything that needs to get done.

Prioritize and delegate things on this list. We all think we are the only ones that can complete the list, but if you take a step back and look at all to be done, I promise you there are willing and able bodies that can help. Let your children decorate the tree this year, or ask your partner to help wrap presents.

Sure, they may not look as perfect as you like, but we all know--once a gift is given, the wrapping is forgotten!

Don’t Spend Beyond Your Means

Make a budget before your first gift is purchased. Budget for each family member, friend, and secret Santa gift in the office. Looking at the budget before the shopping even begins will allow you to stay within your means, and not be surprised in January when the bills begin to roll in.

If you have the luxury, pay with cash. Go to the bank before your shopping begins and get cash--once the cash is out, you’re done!

Don’t Overextend Yourself

We all get caught up in accepting every invitation that comes our way, but remember--you don’t have to say "yes" to them all.

The holidays are a special time for the young members of your family--and if you are going out every weekend, you’ll miss out on those special holiday movie nights snuggled on the couch with hot cocoa and a classic holiday movie special.

Take Care of Yourself

If you try and do it all without taking time for yourself, you’ll end up tired, grumpy, and possibly even sick. What good will you be if you are not feeling your best this time of the year?

Taking care of yourself should include moving your body--and exercise is key to feeling good. I’m not saying you need to go running every day, but a nice walk in the crisp cold air can do wonders for the body and soul. It is also important to eat well, especially when you have control of what is being served at a meal. If you take control over the meals you are eating at home, this will allow you more freedom to indulge a bit more when out celebrating with friends and family.

Besides eating well and moving your body, the most important variable to taking care of yourself is SLEEP! Get plenty of it, and you’ll be amazed how good you’ll feel and how refreshed you’ll look.

Don’t let the holiday season come and go without enjoying it. This is the time of the year to be creating memories big and small. I’m amazed each year when our children ask if we can do a particular activity again "like last year." Family activities are traditions you have created, and those are memories your children will carry with them for a lifetime.
