Happy Galentine's Day!

Some may protest Valentine’s Day concerned that it’s become just a “Hallmark Holiday”. Sure, some traditions surrounding this holiday can be a bit cheesy but the intention of the day is so much more. It’s to celebrate love in all forms. Between partners, family, friends, peers, furry friends, etc. And yes, you could make the argument that we should celebrate love every day of the year but, do you? Everyday life can be very busy and stressful. Sometimes we lose sight of what’s important. Valentine’s Day helps provide a day for us all to remember and appreciate all of the people that support us through the ups and downs.

This holiday is often targeted towards romantic couples. Commercials tell you the perfect gift for your special someone, restaurants boast about their wonderful, romantic meals. But, the day doesn’t have to only be about those types of relationships. Friends are a very important part of everyone’s life. One way to celebrate Valentine’s Day is to have your own Galentine’s Day!

Galentine's Day

If you haven’t heard about it already, Galentine’s Day is a holiday created by the character Leslie Knope from the T.V. show Parks and Recreation. Leslie is known for truly cherishing and appreciating all the people in her life. She decided she needed a day to tell the women around her how special they are so, created Galentine’s Day. As Knope describes, the holiday is for, “Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair minus the angst. Plus frittatas”. Traditionally celebrated the day before Valentine’s Day, the holiday has become an event for many in real life despite its T.V. origins.

It’s important to help lift our fellow women up and encourage each other. Regardless of what else is going on in our lives, we know we have our friends to lean on. This is especially true with outdoor adventures. While any adventure buddy is a good one, it’s nice to have fellow female adventurists to share experiences with. Women often tackle certain activities and obstacles different than men. Such as rock climbing, it’s well known that men and women climb in very different ways due to various things. It can be helpful to have someone who can more easily relate to the specifics of your endeavor.

Girls Celebrating Galentine's Day

So, whether it’s today, tomorrow or this weekend have a Galentine's Day with your girls! Maybe brunch followed by some laps on the hill or a hike wrapped up by happy hour drinks and snacks. Whatever you choose, enjoy and celebrate the strong females in your life.
